The Practice Education Committee (PEC), a sub-committee of the BCAHC Operating Committee, works towards coordinating a systematic approach to student practice education, facilitating the development and implementation of strategies to:

  • Expand BC’s capacity for practice education placements

  • Improve planning and decision making

  • Focus on quality

  • Strengthen management

  • Leverage technology

This past year the Practice Education Strategic Plan was updated and sent to the Operating committee for approval and, once approved, a workplan was developed.  The formation of the Preceptor Development and Support Forum, the International Practice Experience Forum and the continued support of the Health Authority Working Group (HAWG) were approved.  The PEC endorsed the Immunization Guideline, Documentation Guideline and revision of the Criminal Record Check Guideline that HAWG developed and then posted on HSPnet.  The HSPnet Management Committee became a sub-committee of the PEC.

A new Practice Education website was launched in September and is being revised based on user feedback.  An update from the Practice Education Innovation Fund (PEIF) project managers on lessons learned and a Database of Practice Education Initiatives throughout BC is being developed at this time.

Key Initiatives

Practice Education Strategic Plan

The PEC, under a mandate provided by the Operating Committee, has prepared a strategic planning document identifying key priorities for an effective and sustainable Practice Education infrastructure for the province. The PEC has evolved this plan, through investments, meetings and consultations and incorporating the project outcomes from the Practice Education Innovation Fund and the Practice Education Open Space session held in November 2007.

Practice Education Innovation Fund

The PEC was responsible for the administration of the Practice Education Innovation Fund - project funding to enhance and support significant improvements in capacity and quality of practice education.

Practice Education Guidelines

The PEC is responsible for the endorsement of standardized provincial guidelines for health authorities that address a number of important policy issues relevant to clinical practice education.
