“BCAHC Simulation Event: Simulation as a vital part of medical education”
On December 10th, 2008, BCAHC hosted a simulation event at the Centre of Excellence for Surgical Education and Innovation (CESEI). Master of Ceremonies Connie Evans, BCIT, led participants through seven presentations all of which highlighted the excellence and innovation in simulation work across B.C.
Participants were not only introduced to the various champions at the forefront of SIM innovation, but were encouraged to learn from each other. The day was marked by inspiring stories, engaging dialogue and dynamic learning.

The Preceptor Development Forum is a working group that was created to address sustainability of an interprofessional preceptor development and support program for healthcare professionals across the province of BC. The forum goals and areas of focus include: infrastructure and supports; information sharing and promotion of preceptor experiences; knowledge development and transfer; addressing issues and opportunities.
The purpose of the Preceptor Development Forum is to provide a venue for collaboration and knowledge exchange on preceptor development between healthcare leaders from across the province of BC, in order to strategically develop, implement and evaluate a sustainable interprofessional development and support program for healthcare preceptors.

The BC Academic Health Council’s Practice Education Committee has endorsed the formation of a sustained International Practice Experience Forum to address sustainability of an inter-professional program for health care professionals across the Province of BC (BCAHC, March 2008)

Advancing Practice Education in British Columbia, a strategic plan for practice education, was prepared collaboratively by the Practice Education Committee of the BCAHC. The plan incorporates the outcomes of the Practice Education Innovation Fund (PEIF) projects and the Practice Education Open Space session held at the Practice Makes Perfect (PMP) conference in November 2007. The plan identifies key priorities for an effective and sustainable PE infrastructure for the province.

The Practice Makes Perfect (PMP) Conference, held in Vancouver from November 4-7th, 2007, brought together over 500 delegates from around the world. The excellent turnout indicates that addressing practice education issues such as, interprofessional education, preceptor development, building practice education cultures and capacity, and practice simulation and web-based learning are high priority issues on a worldwide scale
November 2007 - Open Space Session
The PMP conference was followed by the Practice Education Open Space session where conference participants and Practice Education Innovation Fund (PEIF) project teams engaged in a dynamic dialogue session about how working together could improve the quality, capacity and sustainability for PE in B.C. This session also provided an opportunity for PEIF project teams and conference participants to share research and lessons learned. Strategies for continuing the forward momentum generated by the various PE initiatives were also discussed.

January 2007 - Joint meeting BCAHC Practice Education and Operating Committee
During a collaborative session, The Practice Education and Operating Committees reviewed Practice Education (PE) developments over the past three years and discussed future directions. Trends, current state, works-in-progress, and accomplishments were presented. A discussion of gaps, priorities and recommended actions followed.

December 2006 - Progress Evaluation
A practice education evaluation was conducted in 2006 to assess how far B.C. has come in addressing the recommendations set at the 2004 Provincial Student Placement Summit. The Practice Education Progress Report, compiled by the University of British Columbia (UBC) Continuing Professional Development & Knowledge Translation Unit, highlighted the following achievements:

Improved communication and collaboration

New placement sites and improved coordination with existing sites

New methods and models for delivery of practice education

Development and uptake of HSPnet, a comprehensive online practice education management system for the health sciences.

The Practice Education Innovation Fund (PEIF) was established to support projects aimed at enhancing quality, capacity, and management of experiential learning opportunities for students enrolled in healthcare provider education programs in B.C. A total of $6 million in funding was provided from the Ministries of Health and Advanced Education. The fund was subsequently administered by the BC Academic Health Council (BCAHC). The result has been a strategic, coordinated network of projects, individuals and organizations working together to build a strong base for quality practice education.

Following the province-wide Practice Education (PE) survey, a provincial summit was held with over 150 participants from health and education sectors to examine the survey findings. Fourteen recommendations were made for improving practice education in the province.

The Practice Education Committee (PEC) met for the first time. The PEC was formed to coordinate a systematic approach to student practice education in B.C.

HSPnet launched their electronic system in order to improve the coordination of clinical fieldwork placements for health sciences students within HSPnet now reaches a national audience.
